Chapter Nine

North watched his female run from him. The primitive possessive side of him yearned to chase her, to capture his defiant humanoid, breed with her until she admitted she was his.

He couldn’t do that.

His beautiful warrior had asked him if there was space on the Reckless for Myrina the Magnificent, and he was unable to give her the answer she wanted. Her Myrina the Magnificent act, while entertaining, would be a distraction and distractions ended lifespans.

That lifespan could be hers.

If she died, he’d die also…from the guilt of not being able to safeguard her, from the loneliness he’d experience without his female, from the hole in his chest only she could fill.

Having no solutions, he retreated into duty, focusing on the mission Captain had given him, assigned his team. Truth and Dissent would map the terrain. He had to gather the genetic data on his female’s sisters.

Myrina wasn’t willing to assist him with that task. Before completing it himself, he would gather intel on the settlement.

He moved toward its borders, lowering his form to remain undetected, his tread fast and silent. Steve turned his blooms to follow his progress. The plant watched every being and every thing on the planet he’d claimed.

North respected that, was grateful for it. His female had been safeguarded before he could locate her. Now, the role of protecting her was his.

At the moment, he was focused on another role. He crouched. Steve draped his vines over North’s shoulders, partially concealing him.

There were no walls surrounding the settlement, no beings he’d designate as guards. The space appeared to have no protection…other than Steve. The plant encircled the settlement.

Warriors were present. Females kneeled before extensions of Steve.

They fed the plant amani and repeated requests for offspring, for health, for strength in the fighting rings. Their voices were hushed. Their tones were reverent. Their eyes were partially closed. Even the tentacles on their head were still.

Steve was their deity. North glanced at him.

The plant shrugged, accepting it as his due.

North’s gaze returned to the settlement. A female offspring scanned the vegetation. She held a piece of bark in her small pale hands.

Another female offspring ran up to her. “Have you seen her?”

“No. Not yet.” The bark-carrying offspring shook her head. Her tentacles writhed as though protesting the action. “I’m watching for her.”

“Fifteen captures. Can you imagine?” The second offspring released a big breath. “She truly is magnificent.”

North’s head lifted. They were discussing his female.

“Myrina the Magnificent is the best Giver of Life ever.” The first offspring held up the bark. It said exactly that – Best Giver Of Life EVER – in big bright lettering.

“Shout when you see her.” The second offspring sprinted back into the settlement.

His female was worshipped also. North glanced at Steve.

The plant tilted his blooms toward him.

The offspring and likely other residents of the settlement were waiting for Myrina to return…with him, her fifteenth captured male. That feat would be celebrated. She would be respected, valued, revered.

Loved.

Her future would be very different with him.
